L’UBIQUITE RESIDENTIELLE AFRICAINE ET LE CONCEPT DES MIGRATIONS
Abstract
Le concept des migrations fait l'objet depuis un
certain temps d'un debat qui promet d'etre fructueux
pour assurer une meilleure comprehension de ce phfenom&ne. Ce d6bat trouve son fondement dans 1'intferet de
plus en plus grand pour les migrations et fait suite aux
6cueils m6thodologiques auxquels on est confronts lors
de leur 6tude.
SPATIAL VARIATIONS IN INFANT AND CHILD MORTALITY LEVELS IN SIERRA LEONE
Abstract
The general research objectives of this project
were to calculate and map levels of infant, child and
adult mortality in the administrative districts of
Sierra Leone using 1974 census data, followed by a
correlational analysis of these levels with certain key
social variables. These were the distribution of medical
facilities, the distribution of the population with no
formal schooling and malaria endemicity by district.
The results showed an estimated infant mortality rate of
215 in 1971 for Sierra Leone. The proportion of children
dying before their fifth birthday was pegged at -3582
also for 1971- In relation to other African Countries,
Sierra Leone was in the category of countries with very
high infant and child mortality levels.
Infant and child mortality levels in the administrative
areas of Sierra Leone were in general very high but in
addition showed some differences in levels. Only the
Western Area had an infant mortality rate below 160 in
1971. The highest infant mortality rate was in Pujehun
District (272). The pattern is the same when one
examines the proportion of children dying before their
fifth birthday, with the Western Area having the lowest
(.2630) and Pujehun District having the highest (.4431).
Attempts at explaining the regional variation in
mortality levels by the distribution of health facilities, the percentage of the population with no formal
schooling and malaria endemicity failed to provide any
significant results once the Western Area was excluded
from the analysis.
LA FECONDITE EN AFRIQUE NOIRE : UN PROGRES RAPIDE DANS LA CONNAISSANCE DU PHENOHENE MAIS UN AVENIR ENCORE DIFFICILE A DISCERNER
Abstract
Alors que la transition de la fecondite est en
cours dans bon nombre de pays en developpement, et a un
rythme plus rapide que prevu pour certains d'entre eux,
l'Afrique Noire reste une zone de forte fecondite ou les
signes de changement sont pour le moins tenus (tableau
I). De 1950 a nos jours, les niveaux de fecondite des
sous-regions d'Afrique Noire sont stables ou en
augmentation. Seule l'Afrique du Nord (essentiellement
en raison de la baisse de la fecondite en Egypte,
Tunisie) a vu passer le nombre moyen d'enfants par femme
de 6,8 k 5- Dans la meme periode, l'Asie a vu sa
fecondite decliner de 5.9 enfants par femme a 3.1- Le
poids des mesures draconiennes adoptees par la Chine a
largement contribue a cette evolution, mais la plupart
des pays d'Asie sont maintenant engages sur la meme
voie, y compris l'Inde ou les efforts pourtant anciens
de promotion de la limitation des naissances sont restes
longtemps peu efficaces. L'Amerique Latine a, depuis la
fin des annees 60, opere une rapide transition qui a
surpris bien des observateurs (5,9 enfants en 1950-55.
3,1 enfants en 1985-90).
